Health insurers call for Medicare ban on 'harmful' early caesareans | Dana_Adele

Private health insurers are calling on the federal government to halt Medicare rebates for elective caesarean births before 39 weeks' gestation as part of a crackdown on "low value" medical procedures they say is needed to slow the rise in the cost of premiums.

Research has linked early births, including by caesarean, with an increased risk of long-term developmental problems such as poorer school performance and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
