During the trial the jury was told that if they acquitted Mr Ophel on grounds of mental impairment, he would remain in custody and his case would be managed by the ACT Civil and Administrative Tribunal.
The court heard before the attack Mr Ophel searched the internet for topics including"ACT murder laws" and"ACT life sentence", along with searching for ISIS beheading videos."If I was you I'd keep an eye out down under" and"it's getting a bit batty this time of year". Mr Ophel also posted a video on YouTube under the name Thane Jekyll, with a cryptic remark about disappearing:He later told police his plan was to kill everyone in the classroom except for one woman who he would rape.
