Health officials say if you've already received one dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine, you should get a second regardless of your age.

The ATAGI advice says the rare clotting syndrome is both more common and more severe in younger people. And Professor Kelly said seven of the 12 cases of TTS reported last week were in people aged 50 to 59.

"That's been the key new information that's gone to ATAGI, and they've based that [decision] on the risk-benefit equation, being that the risk is now outweighing the benefit," he said. People aged over 60 are both less likely to develop the clotting syndrome and more likely to die of COVID-19, so the benefit continues to outweigh the risk in the eyes of health authorities. The change will increase demand for the Pfizer vaccine, however the Government says it won't impact the current rollout timeline, which aims to have every Australian offered a vaccine by the end of the year.

Lieutenant General John Frewen, who is in charge of the federal government's COVID-19 operations, said the switch to Pfizer for millions of Australians aged 50 to 59 would be a "minor adjustment". "There will be a few weeks of adjustment to get the cohort organised and perhaps switch over to Pfizer but we can accommodate this adjustment," he said.

Isn’t the best practice advice that an Astra Zeneca shot followed by a Pfizer shot likely to give Berger immunity against Covid variants - why are over 60s being given a less effective regime - just because our politicians got it wrong

No, in other countries they are allowing a switch of vax for the 2nd shot. All Aussies deserve a choice. No aussie should be treated as disposable based on age.

Now ask it with the assumption that we were rolling in Pfizer vax and that gov ministers had invested in Pfizer

NO

How about making it mandatory that everybody who wants to return or travel here be fully vaccinated and test negative on 3 occassions before boarding a flight instead of taking the mountain to Mohomad.

Anyone who goes near AZ is crazy.

I understand the problems with clotting will appear after the first dose So if you've had no problems with the first dose you're okay with second. I believe Pfizer problems will appear after the second dose though rarer. I've had one dose AZ and will get second.

No-one should be taking Astra Zeneca!

No one should risk taking this vaccine. Proved defective too many times.

No. They should get pfizer

Just yesterday the advice was clear… AZ vaccine safe for over 50s…

Another day passes when I didnt book my jab.....because!

Got mine on Monday! Happy as a clam that I am protecting myself and the community 😊

Stop with the scare tactics. Do you want us vaccinating to not…

Just got advised by ACT health that my second dose has to be AZ. They can fuck off! I demand a choice on second dose!

Glad that they are at least crystal clear with this message. Sigh

50 plus and had 2nd Pfizer a few days ago, I’m a trend setter!

Someone’s gonna have to make another Pfizer order. auspol Vaccine

Yeah sure, people in my age bracket 60s to 70s are dispensable NOT

It frustrates me that our health bureaucrats are sprouting lies about mix-n-match of vaccines in the face of multiple international studies, expressly to support the government’s rollout program. Pfizer/AZ combo is being offered in several countries, including Canada.

ATAGI reveals 12 cases of clotting related to the AstraZeneca vaccine | Sky News AustraliaChief Medical Officer Professor Paul Kelly says there have been 12 cases of blood clotting connected to the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine in the last week.\n\nSeven of these cases occurred in people aged between 50 and 59-years-old at a rate similar to that of those in the under-50s category.\n\nProfessor Kelly said the rates of blood clots for over-50s is behind the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation's (ATAGI) decision to lift the age recommendation for the AstraZeneca vaccine to 60-year-olds and over.\n\n“The benefit of AstraZeneca in over 60s remains much higher than the risk of this particularly rare, but sometimes serious syndrome, and so people over 60 should still be rolling up to their GP or wherever they are getting their AstraZeneca vaccine,” he said.\n\nProfessor Kelly said those who had already received the first dose of AstraZeneca to get the second dose and not to mix COVID-19 vaccines. \n Why is the LNP trying to bump off boomers? Top-up Pfizer would be used to fully vaccinate Victorians, state government told CommonwealthHealth Minister Martin Foley wrote to his federal counterpart Greg Hunt thanking him for providing more Pfizer doses to meet the increased demand for vaccine uptake in Victoria. Under 50s can safely have the AstraZeneca. Why is it up to the states to provide the logistics for the vaccines and quarantine? Morrison wants no responsibility for anything. No responsibility, with a couple of media outlets available to bury stories at txt message request. It's Trumpism heaven. Blame the ABC. Very intelligent move. We are at the front of the Q.
