A study of more than 30,000 children has found parents who bottle-feed their infants are putting them at risk.

In the largest study of its kind — looking at 30,000 children across 16 nations — experts have concluded breastfeeding protects infants from gaining weight early in life.Children who are fed formula milk from birth were found to be, on average, 25 per cent more likely to be obese than those who are nursed naturally for six months. The study found, in the UK alone, one in three children who graduate from primary school are overweight or obese.

The reasons why breast milk protect children against obesity are unclear, but experts suggest it delays a child’s introduction to solid food, which can often lead to poor eating habits. Researcher Dr Joao Breda, from the WHO European Office for Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases, said feeding a child with a bottle was never as good as a breast.

Breast is best! However not all women can breast feed and should not be made feel inferior or a bad parent because they can’t. My wife couldn’t.

This is not new, and seriously not very helpful, especially to young parents who are already stressed with having a new baby, and who often can’t breast feed for a variety of reasons, beyond their control.

Der

I’ll have to tell my mum it’s all her fault then and that she should have just starved me? Because obesity is so bad that her baby starving would have been better? Got it!

What a load of codswallop

I can’t believe you post this crap on a news page!

That is a bundle of crap.

Breastfeeding is best

There was a time in the 50 - 80's that the vast majority bottle feed. There were no outstanding health issues. History proves this 'study' wrong.

BULLSHIT

Breastfeeding also reduces the mother’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life 😊

Bullshit

This is dumb af. Plenty of babies reject the breast, plenty of Mums have trouble producing.

Turn it up you lot.

🙄

I have 3 kids, all fed differently, breasts and bottle or a combo. None are overweight but of course it makes no difference anyway. Exercise and healthy eating are what matters. Model that and they’ll be fine 🤦‍♀️

we all knew that decades ago.

What a load of BS: 4 children - 2 breastfed, 2 bottlefed. No difference in bonding, development or health. In fact my totally breastfed 4th child was the sickest due to her brothers bringing bugs home from school/kindy

This disgraceful tweet is pure hate bait and you're achieving that in buckets.

Another scaremongering useless waste of my time. You are_souls without conscience.

Not a new discovery... 🙄

B S

where is the link to the study?

You know what, some mothers can’t breastfeed. It’s not as natural as some make out. I lost my milk at 4 weeks after my mother died. Stop putting more pressure on mothers. Geeze. No one wants to pay for formula if they can breastfeed.

Oh ffs....

In other news ..... breathing puts you at risk

Okay. We shall stop feeding our babies! Thanks you guys are life savers! Literally!

What a load of shit

This tweet sucks, honestly

What a load of crap. Sedentary lifestyles are the cause of obesity, not how a person is fed in the early months of life.

experts have concluded breastfeeding protects infants from gaining weight early in life. BS, when I was a baby, I was bottle fed and I was not an overweight child. Children become overweight or obese because they eat too much junkfood and consume too much sugary softdrinks

That is a disgraceful scaremongering tweet,

Of course because if you can’t or choose not to breastfeed your child should starve? Bigger issues out there regarding child safety and being or not being breastfeed isn’t one of the.

Bullllssshhitttttttt

FED IS BEST REGARDLESS OF THE METHOD!! Yes I'm yelling!!!!

And what about those who have no choice but to bottle feed?

WHO should stick to feeding refugees and not waste money on irrelevant research

what rubbish. my parents and my generation were all bottle fed and are obese. this generation are the ones at risk and it is likely to be food choices lack of exercise etc rather than if they were bf

stop it

This is a disgraceful headline tweet. You should be ashamed of yourself .
