The sit-rise challenge, developed to predict longevity, is a good of strength and balance. But getting a low score doesn’t mean death is near.

By Erin Strout March 19 at 8:25 AM It seems a simple enough challenge: Sit down on the floor and get back up without the help of your hands or knees. Try it, though, and you might discover it’s not as easy as it sounds.

Sure, the test is a good measure of leg and core strength, as well as balance. Older adults who have such muscular strength and flexibility are less likely to fall. And falls are the leading cause of unintentional-injury-related deaths for people ages 65 and older, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Frailty, strength, muscle mass, physical performance — those things are all correlated to mortality, but I would caution everybody that correlation doesn’t mean causation,” Hartley said. “For example, if somebody had a really bad knee and there’s no way they could do the test, just because that person has a really bad knee doesn’t mean they’re going to die soon.”

“You can practice every day — teaching to the test, in other words,” Resnick said. “Resilience is also part of it. Are you going to keep trying or are you going to just going say, ‘The heck with it’?” “If you can walk at your natural pace at two miles per hour or faster, you’re a lot less likely to die in the next 10 years,” Hartley said. “Walking speed is highly correlated to mortality.”

My 6 yr okd cant do this either

My left ankle doesn’t flex due to an old injury. Does this mean my death is due to my ankle? Damn it!!!

I’m dead!

Crap. Did it 4 times in a row with no problem. My retirement fund needs to be reworked...

Wonderful how many days since the last press briefing?

I have MS balance problems. Even at my fittest I couldn’t do that. However I can touch my toes!

Then I guess I’m already dead.

Dude, I have never in my life been able to do this. Even as a child.

Wash post used to be about news.

No thanks, I like surprises.

So: you won't get caught up in a mass shooting or get hit by a bus if you can pull this move, eh?

If that's a truly accurate predictor, then I died yesterday. 😵
