Scott Morrison has become the first PM to visit Christmas Island. Gary_Hardgrave: What the PM has done today is a very good thing - it has shown the media what the detention island looks like. MORE: pmlive

Scott Morrison has become the first sitting Prime Minister to visit Christmas Island, where he reaffirmed the government's goal to bring medical transfers from Manus Island and Nauru to the immigration facilities.

Mr Morrison told reporters on Wednesday that he had been pleased to be able to close the facility last year, but said Labor's part in passing the medivac bill has required his government to reopen it. Medical evacuation laws that passed parliament against the government's wishes last month make it easier for sick asylum seekers to come to Australia, although the immigration minister can still reject transfers based on national security grounds. The government has budgeted $1.

Morrison won't amend 'medevac' legislationScott Morrison has ruled out trying to wind back changes to medical evacuations for asylum seekers and refugees on Manus Island and Nauru. seeing as he is in minority government and doesn't have the numbers to do this - his 'decision' is a teensy bit irrelevant. thepmo be careful, lest you get repealed. auspol qldpol ausvotes2019 The reason he won’t is because he hasn’t got the numbers. How hard is that to understand?
