An Australian psychiatrist welcomes US approval of a depression treatment based on a chemical cousin of the club drug known as special K, but wants close monitoring if it is introduced here.

Professor Loo said that like many medications, it is difficult to pinpoint exactly what ketamine does that makes it effective.

The FDA approved Spravato based on study results that showed patients taking the drug experienced a bigger improvement in their depression levels than patients on a placebo treatment, when measured with a psychiatric questionnaire. Ms Prothro, who takes the drug every two weeks at her psychiatrist's office, says her depression has lifted since participating in the trial.

Ketamine seems to be a promising looking drug, my daughter is currently undergoing a treatment plan in USA & she has said that so far she has been feeling a lot better....not cheap between $150 - $500 per treatment depending if insurance covers it.

Can't let people smoke some weed for depression, but horse tranqs are defensible to combat depression? Find some consistency. Please.

This is a joke right? Do yous honestly believe that ketamine is the solution to depression

Depression is fucked and hard to control

just like we completely fucked up with MDMA (which i've never tried .. 'cos it was made illegal.)

Medivac bill will see Australians miss out on treatment: Cormann | Sky News AustraliaFULL INTERVIEW: Mathias Cormann says Australians will be 'kicked out of their houses' and will be forced to wait longer for medical treatment if asylum seekers from Manus Island and Nauru are flown to the mainland under medivac laws.\n\nSo far, no asylum seeker on Manus Island and Nauru has been treated in Australia, despite the passage of the controversial medivac bill last month.\n\nThe legislation, which has yet to receive royal assent, gives doctors a greater say over whether asylum seekers in offshore detention centres can be flown to Australia for treatment, though it still allows the Home Affairs minister to reject transfers on national security grounds.\n\nLabor frontbencher Kristina Keneally has told Sky News the government is engaging in 'fearmongering' over the issue.\n\nMr Cormann says despite Labor's claims, it's a 'fact' that asylum seekers transferred from offshore detention centres would be utilising facilities at the expense of Australians.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n J_C_Campbell That is an utterly atrocious claim from the government. J_C_Campbell But it is true. J_C_Campbell Agree, they have this vote already. The more they go on like this the greater chance of them losing votes. They will only win back votes if they turn positive with policies for the future. Not holding my breath
