The infections were caused by a bacteria called Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Investigators detected it in open EzriCare bottles, but further testing was underway.Both the Washington State Department of Health and Center for Disease Control and Prevention are warning the public against using a brand of artificial tears, due to infections caused by the eye drops. Some of which have resulted in loss of vision, or even death.
The outbreak is considered particularly worrisome because the bacteria driving it are resistant to standard antibiotics.
