Strikes by NHS staff will go ahead this month after a meeting between union bosses and the health secretary broke down.

Steve Barclay failed to avert further walkouts by ambulance workers and auxiliary NHS staff during a short meeting on Monday.

Union leaders reacted in anger over the meeting, which had been seen as a breakthrough in relations after the government initially said it would not talk about pay with unions. Onay Kasab, Unite's national lead, said the government"only wanted to talk about productivity" and said there was no detailed discussion on a pay settlement as he confirmed strikes by ambulance workers will go ahead on 23 January.

"Productivity when our members are working 18-hour shifts! Quite how you become more productive, I don't know," he said.Mr Kasab added it was"absolutely ludicrous" and"outrageous" the government only wanted to talk about NHS staff being more productive in exchange for a pay rise.

I really want the NHS to collapse. We must understand that we Brits are slobs. There isnt any hope for a nation when you have slobs to deal with.

Of course they broke down, it’s a coordinated union action to bring the company to its knees

who do you pay to write these tweets?

His duty is to resolve this urgently! If he can’t, he needs to step down!

They can’t negotiate with their own MPs - why expect them to be ready for the Unions ?

Steve Barclay’s failure in an important aspect of his Ministry has been the stimulus for bringing on the strikes that could so readily have been avoided with realistic & honourable negotiations with one of the hardest working group of underpaid professionals in the country.

The tories want poor people dead.

It's simple, if they give NHS staff pay rises, how will they afford their own pay rise in April?

FTT ATAB

Lazy nurses, sack them all, and bring in qualified nurses from the Philippines, they work harder and will accept a fair wage instead of these outlandish amounts.

Thought RCN said if they talked they would cancel strikes.....England, Scotland and Wales are all talking but still striking

They should be SAKED, and that goes for anyone who strikes. Be grateful that you have a job. Just think of all the unpaid carers, like myself, working or being on call 24/7 365. No bank holidays, no rest, alway there. Your attitude is pathetic and disgusting.

Steve Barclay is a tit that's why and couldnt give a toss👍

Good luck to all the staff. Torys out!! Call a general election now!

Oh ffs , I hate this government

All by design with the Conservatives. They want the NHS to fail.

That'd be because he's an enormous plank

Unions: we demand more pay. Gov: ok, but before we discuss that we need to talk about how the NHS can be modernised, improved & savings made to pay the extra money. Unions: nope! We don’t care about that! We just want more money!

Government never intended any resolution from these meetings - they want the confrontation with the Unions to try and bring in the anti Union legislation and present as a tough Government - they do not care if people die n the process

They my complete support 💙💙💙💙

thecloudchild 😂 the slogan should have been 'Rishi is not ready'

Well obviously 🙄 the negotiation wasn’t focused on pay

I'm absolutely 100% behind these strikes. The Tories think the public will turn against them but they will soon find how wrong they are about that.

These evil tories are bringing this country to its knees !

The government are playing politics now with peoples lives. They must just come to a deal with nurses and get the country running again. They have given up.

celticmaid4 The government had no intention of negotiating in good faith. To table productivity when they have presided over reduced funding and massive staff shortages is intended as the insult it is. They want to trash it and are doing.

These strikes are killing the country and one has to ask how manipulated these all are! Personally I believe and have done for some time now, that the NHS is being slowly and deliberately closed down. The bare minimum that we’ll be left with is a partly subsidised health service

TheStephenRalph Barclay couldn’t negotiate his way out of a wet paper bag

The tories don’t want the NHS fixed, they want to drive it into the ground, which incidentally they are doing a very good job of, an American health system where they can sell off the NHS is coming.

Up the workers! theRCN unisontheunion

Maybe this was always going to be so. The Unions just want trouble not solutions.........

Incompetent people like Steve or unwilling to negotiate with workers? Which on is it Steve? Or both?

Shame on this government. Solidarity with the strikers.

Talking to him is like talking to a Brick Wall he is not Qualified to do this Job he only goes on the information fed to him by the Civil Servants in that Department, MP’s are not allocated their posts on their Ability to do the job it’s just who’s in Favour at the time.

This government is beyond joke. Conmen and women alike allowed to grind everything into the ground whilst people struggle. As long as the MPs are ok though. Sickening.
