Victoria has dismissed health advice for sweeping mask mandates amid a surge in COVID-19 cases, instead issuing new recommendations to residents under the state's pandemic orders.

Mary-Anne Thomas said on Tuesday that she had dismissed the advice from Acting Chief Health Officer Professor Ben Cowie to return mandates to early childhood learning, schools, hospitality and retail.

The Victorian Government has instead issued new recommendations for residents set to come into force from 11:59pm on Tuesday. The new Omicron subvariants, BA.4 and BA.5, have contributed to hospitalisations, with admissions in Victoria increasing by 53 per cent in the past two weeks.

Health minister defends pandemic payment end as access to COVID-19 anti-virals expandsHealth Minister Mark Butler says government payments for those isolating with COVID-19 were never meant to be a permanent measure. It wasn't - however it does flag the challenge of how society functions if significant part of the population is in precarious work that doesn't have any sick leave. The casualisation of the work force is a blight So the idea is to create a mass spread of covid19 with no mask mandates, no 'covid sick pay' so folk will have to work while sick....cant help but wonder if the government has faced up to long covid yet...are short term economic gains worth a whole lot of long term pain...🤔 It's a measure for the duration of the pandemic & the pandemic isn't over.

Health service apology after elderly man's lengthy waitThe family of an 83-year-old man say they were left traumatised by a delay getting him from an ambulance to an emergency bed and then from an emergency bed into a ward. NSW better than Vic or QLD but all health systems under stress ... doctors working 18 hour days and being refused relief or overtime ... Beds are about nurses not doctors! Too much money is and was given to the corporate world to the detriment of our healthcare, the success of private business should not be put before the health of citizens.
