Health Minister Mark Butler says government payments for those isolating with COVID-19 were never meant to be a permanent measure.

The payments, which ended on 30 June, were for people who needed to spend time away from their work due to needing to isolate for seven days with COVID-19.

"If we extended these for a couple of months, we would have had this discussion at that time. These are hard decision you have to make when you're $1 trillion in debt." "We want to make sure people are on a job ... we have to be careful and make sure you get to a point where you have to live with COVID," he told the Seven Network.

An additional 7.4 million people will be able to receive a fourth vaccine dose, with people over 50 recommended to get the extra booster, while those over 30 are also eligible.

false dichotomy .. if you want to reduce spread you need to support people to stay home. Disingenuous politics. Employees without sick leave left need to work to pay the bills. Casual workers do not have sick leave entitlements so need to work to pay the bills. COVID19

They could easily continue to pay Emergency Payments if they bothered to get back the $40 billion of JobKeeper given to profitable buisness by the previous govt..

It's a measure for the duration of the pandemic & the pandemic isn't over.

So the idea is to create a mass spread of covid19 with no mask mandates, no 'covid sick pay' so folk will have to work while sick....cant help but wonder if the government has faced up to long covid yet...are short term economic gains worth a whole lot of long term pain...🤔

It wasn't - however it does flag the challenge of how society functions if significant part of the population is in precarious work that doesn't have any sick leave. The casualisation of the work force is a blight
