The 56-year-old Minister for Health and Aged Care confirmed his retirement plans on Thursday, saying he was proud to have played a role in the nation’s COVID response throughout the pandemic and was confident Australia was “well prepared for the future”.
“I couldn’t have thought to have a no-more brilliant mind, no greater friend, a person of great integrity, but most importantly someone with a massive heart,” the Prime Minister said. Mr Frydenberg expressed his sadness at Mr Hunt’s expected exit from politics on Thursday morning, ahead of the Health Minister’s anticipated announcement.
“There has been no more competent or more assiduous minister throughout the life of this government and he leaves very big shoes to fill,” Mr Abbott wrote on Twitter. The Australian Medical Association acknowledged Mr Hunt's commitment to the role, noting he had worked very closely with them in tackling the COVID crisis.
