Fears are mounting over the coronavirus pandemic tearing through Victoria’s age care system as one facility saw infections quadruple overnight.

Families of residents at St Basil’s Home for the Aged in north Melbourne were told the state’s health department would take over the Greek Orthodox facility and staff would be sent home.

The number of cases in the aged care home jumped from 13 to 51 overnight making it Victoria’s largest aged care cluster. Health authorities linked 38 cases to Menarock Life Aged Care in Essendon and 42 at Estia Health in Adeer.
