The New South Wales government is tightening its control over border permits for Victorian residents.

There are now only three reasons people will be granted an exemption to travel to NSW, including for work, education or medical reasons. Meanwhile, the debate over mask wearing is intensifying in NSW.

NSW Transport Minister Andrew Constance said while masks were not compulsory, they had a part to play in stemming the coronavirus outbreak. “We are encouraging people right across the community, whether it’s on public transport or in a shopping centre, if you can’t physically distance then you should be wearing a mask,” he said. NSW not considering pub, restaurant closures unless daily COVID-19 cases hit 100 | Sky News AustraliaThe NSW government is not looking to shut down pubs and restaurants until COVID-19 cases begin to hit around 100 new cases per day, according to Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell.\n\nHealth authorities confirmed 13 new cases of COVID-19 were recorded in the state in the 24 hours to 8pm on July 20.\n\nVictoria is still grappling with a surge in cases, with Premier Daniel Andrews confirming 374 new cases of the virus in the past 24 hours.\n\nMr Clennel said while the NSW outbreak is not as dire as Victoria, authorities are prepared to act if conditions deteriorate.\n\n“So with more bad numbers for Victoria and daily new cases around the 15-20 mark in Sydney, there has been speculation that pubs and restaurants might be shut down again in NSW – something that would have a real impact on the economy and those JobKeeper estimates,” Mr Clennell said.\n\n“I am reliably told that such closures are just not on the agenda at the moment, but if figures were to get to around 100 new cases a day then that would be happening. \n\n“So New South Wales businesses and everyone from the PM and Treasurer down need to hope that’s not the case. \n\n“Health sources are telling me that it is too early to speculate on a longer shutdown than six weeks in Victoria. \n\n“We will know more when we see case numbers in two weeks.”\n\nImage: Getty aclennell Why is the NSW punishing border towns with its current restrictions? aclennell By which time it could be too late. aclennell Don’t forget gyms too.
