Police were forced to disperse protesters in Sydney's CBD overnight when a second Black Lives Matter rally failed to attract a sizeable crowd.

Police were forced to disperse protesters in Sydney's CBD overnight when a second Black Lives Matter rally failed to attract a sizeable crowd. One person was taken into custody, and hundreds more were moved on following strict warnings from NSW Police they would enforce coronavirus rules and issue fines to anyone who resisted. Another rally, for refugee rights, is planned for tonight despite a court deeming it unlawful.

A heavy police presence is expected after event organisers said they planned to go ahead in defiance of the court ruling. Prime Minister Scott Morrison made a final plea to Australians not to attend this weekend’s protests, saying “it puts not only your own health at risk, but it puts other people’s lives at risk”. “This is not about the issue people are raising, this is about people’s health and welfare and I would urge Australians to respect that,” he said.
