It’s hard to imagine too many others, facing a terminal diagnosis, racing so much and raising nearly $600,000. For Carol Chaoui, running is a life-giving force.

In 2018, however, the cancer started to spread again, and the chemotherapies and other regimens she was on began to lose their effectiveness.

The beginning of 2019 didn’t start out much better. She was on a high-dose steroid and intravenous chemotherapy, and she could only run-walk. More concerning, the treatments didn’t seem to be helping much. Chaoui ran the BAA Half Marathon on October 13 and the Boston 10K for Women the following day. Then she started thinking about the NYC Marathon. After all, she had a number—she had deferred in 2018 when the cancer had spread to her brain.On Thursday before the race, Chaoui went toin Boston for a monthly injection in her glutes, which is extremely painful. On Saturday, she boarded the bus to New York.
