With films playing a key role in shaping attitudes to mental health, two doctors say Joaquin Phoenix’s troubled supervillain perpetuates damaging stereotypes

As doctors who work on acute inpatient psychiatric wards, serious mental illness is our daily reality. We have, therefore, watched the controversies around Todd Phillips’s Joker – in which Joaquin Phoenix plays a troubled loner who turns to violence – with professional interest.

As someone with long term MH issues, I feel the film earned its place by showing how cuts to MH healthcare affect people. Of course, no one turns into the joker IRL, but by cutting counselling and medication, people will and do suffer/die. Fund the NHS ASAP.

Are you guys clinical psychologists now? StickToYourKnitting JokerMovie

All this article demonstrates is the typical pseudo-intellect of 'Junior doctors' that feel that they are an authority on the issue while, despite that, still making a bunch of silly mistakes in the article they wrote.

I have never read such a misinformed and ignorant article in my life. Some movies should be watched more than once.

Wait until you see Batman's depiction of orphans

Nonsense. Mental health problems affect people in different ways and all those angles need exploring. I could see a friend from my youth in this character. Not all people with mental heath problems are violent but most violent people suffer from mental health problems !

Yeah it’s fiction, get over it.

Ffs it’s an anti-austerity film. Kids whose parents are killed don’t turn into Batman either, y’know.

Yes because you clearly know everything about every mental illness. Screw off.

Some of those suffering with mental illness do behave violently, as The Guardian points out in many an article on Islamic terrorism.

This is tripe

Why would you make a psychological analysis of art? This is an interpretation of a DC Comics character, so I don’t see how fiction should be interpreted this way. Let’s appreciate good story-telling and the great actor JoaqPhoenix

Just like many doctors- completely ignoring the wider context of his mental illness.

Woke media trying to pick apart Joker again. Hit a nerve?

look I understand why does BS articles like this, because it generates clickbait money for them, but come one at least try to make sense - by the way, this is a movie, a work of fiction based on a comic book character

Life’s so safe we’ve run out of articles to write so we’re making up ones cause our medium is no longer profitable

Jesus christ, the Guardian hates Joker. We get it already.

Thanks to the guardian for posting this article, for I would have gone about my life believing that all mentally ill people are exactly like this 🙄 (for those who can't tell, this is sarcasm)

A film that depicts a man coping with mental health issues, then bit by bit has all his support systems stripped away, then has the media glorify his self defence killing of two & chase down and killing of the third gets sent over the edge... What film did you actually watch?

The Guardian - dangerously misinformed...

It's a film, not a therapy session.

JoshuaTiddy

The G just mad they couldn't have a negative impact on a film that sympathises with a poor mentally ill single white man.

“The worst part about having a mental illness is people expect you to behave as if you don’t.”

Absolutely horrible article that cannot even fact check the most basic facts. Arthur's imaginings of his romantic relationships were NOT hallucinations. They served to show he was just imagining/fantasising of a romantic relationship with her. Furthermore, he doesn't descend

Nope. As a sufferer of mental illness and the societal effects that surround/reinforce it, this is one of the most honest portrayals of a whole person we’ve seen on screen (suffering from MI or not). You’ve missed the nuance

If anyone knows about being dangerously misinformed, it’s The Guardian.

Why the Guardian is like that dreary twat we've all met who tries to shit all over things people like.

HanrattyDave

Why people shouldn’t get information about mental illness from a superhero movie should be the next headline. Why the media is shit for pushing that narrative in the first place should be the third. 🙄

Watching the film as someone who has suffered from psychosis and depression, I think the film dealt with mental illness brilliantly - I felt comforted by the portrayal and saw the violence as a result of an uncaring world - not mental illness.

The actions in this film are based on real events

Gaasaka3 'Arthur comes across as a hysterically laughing supervillain...' -you do realise he's the Joker, right?

Behold, the eight wonder of the world: a movie that can keep creating articles long after anyone cares.

It's just a movie dude, chill. Also batman isn't real. Sowwy!

Oh my god... I think the director used his... imagination...

If anything it puts mental health in the spotlight you jumped up cretinous beats.

Shhhh... You've been wrong about this movie from th very start. The chances of you being right now are slim to none. I'd say quit while you're ahead, but you're behind, so far behind in fact, that you just look ridiculous.

So people angry due to well thought out think pieces on a movie they like...not everyone has to like the same movie.

You're just sad Joker put his thumbs inside Batman's mouth.

The Hobbit's depiction of middle earth was even worse

It's fiction. Why can't the media accept that?

It's a bloody movie. It can do as it wants

Totally agree. Also these films can also be very misleading about bats, I have never seen one so much as ride a bike let alone drive a multifunctional supercar. Films just seem to be more and more fake news

Is this the film where society is full of self centred violent people who attack and pick on the weak. So, one of the weak has had it, and goes wild and brings it back home to the very ones who do it under a guise of being 'normal'. Is it that film sweethearts? Aw, big hugs. 🤡😈

Pathetic article from a pathetic and failing publication 🤷🏼‍♂️

Stunning film. I must confess my sympathy (for most of the film) was with Arthur - I didn't see the representation of mental health that your commentators saw. Arthur was continually let down by the state, family, work that should have been his support network.

The question is: did Arthur’s violence stem from mental illness? Or did it stem from his frustrations with society picking on the disadvantaged like him? Seems like doesn’t understand the movie at all

It’s not real? Stupid article.

It’s A Movie!

Article finishes with promoting brain damaging Electric shock while criticising one of the best classic films ever on Psychiatric abuse of power. Interesting! Strange ECT ending. Makes me wonder what the agenda is. Psychiatry don't care about stigma. Cc MaddockMary Keirwales

First of all, the Joker performed by Phoenix is not a supervillain. And mental illness is one of the componenents of his multiple personality. Viewers must insert the Joker in the complezxity of nowadays society.

This movie showed how someone that had been abused as a child, with a disease NOBODY understood was poorly treaten by society and considered a 'weirdo' because they couldn't care less to emphasize with him and treat him kindly... seems pretty accurate to me.

I went out after the movie and bought stuff

“Why Joker’s depiction of clowns and struggling stand up comics in a non-documentary is dangerously misinformed”. subheading “Hannibal not really a credible Cannibal - lambs will no longer remain silent” 🤦🏻‍♂️

To be fair... It is a film based on a comic book, where a clown and a bat have a feud. It's not a documentary. Jeez

The article that those suffering mental illness are more likely to be victims of violence. The film portrays this. He was attacked on the tube because of his mental illness. Secondly his violence is a reaction to how society treats him.

Ok but what's your stance on the purge 1, purge 2, and purge tv show?

Y’all say this yet a professional psychologist literally said it was the best depiction he’s seen in a long time. Nice try fuckwits

ITS A SUPERVILLAIN MOVIE HOLY FUCKING AIDS

It's...a...movie.

STOP RESISTING. IT WAS A GOOD MOVIE. YOU WERE WRONG. OWN IT.

Chill out, dickwad.

Poor written article as usual. Joker was a comic book character not a documentary.

Bullshit. ANYONE who has experienced mental illness or been around a mentally ill person knows that what Joker showed is EXACTLY like it is. If that bothers you, fine. But don’t lie and tell people it’s not this way.

It’s entertainment. Not a documentary. Why the who ha?

And others say it's right on the money. Try writing a real article, Guardian.

What’s next? “Why Aquaman’s Ability to Hold His Breath is Dangerously Misinformed”? ItsAMovie

Someone didn't see the movie ~

Like The Guardian, the Joker is a work of fiction.

shut up

Stop trying to find reasons to hate this movie

it's just a movie!

Yawn. Bore off. Incredible film with sensitive attention to several difficult topics.

It's not a documentary

Because of The Chilean President Oppression Sebastian Piñeraaa RenunciaPiñera

It’s a film.

Do you think he is mentally ill? I think he's suffered massive physical trauma and subsequently suffers from brain damage. Little aside, I'm sure every time he is violent he is struck in the head in some form.

hurr burr

Oh boy these two sound fun.

It’s a fictional story. FYI.

afneil

Don't care loved it

This review makes me want to watch it. Decided. I will go next Saturday!

'people with severe mental illness are more vulnerable to violence from others' the film shows that repeatedly

Wrong

How much longer are you idiots going to huff and puff and stomp your feet and hold your breath like a child who doesnt get their way? It's been months now... it's okay to move on.

He's a comic book villain you fools

Pretty accurate to me, bud.

I've heard pretty much exactly the opposite from people directly in the field. How hard did you guys have to look for someone who disagreed so that you could continue to try and smear this film? Pathetic

It's not a fucking documentary

It's a movie ffs

A movie that isn't realistic imagine that.

*Not based on actual events.

Damage control? Admit you missed it, you were wrong, we all liked it, the movie is a masterpiece.

Incorrect. It was a nuanced, sensitive, measured, brilliant depiction

Shut up

ENOUGH. Just stop this fucking nonsense. The Joker doesn't portray all mentally ill people as violent. THAT'S A STRAW MAN ARGUMENT. Part of the problem was caused by violence against Arthur. Most mentally ill people don't get violent but some do. Hollywood gets to tell that story

It’s a film ffs

'Joker subscribes to.. the hackneyed association between serious mental illness...and mental deterioration necessarily leads to violence against others – Studies show this association is exaggerated' Film exaggerates reality. Stop the presses.

Looking at all art through the woke lens.. urghhhh.. so fucking tedious

Do they realise it’s a film ?

Again it’s a film, why all this hysteria.

Christ get some new material to pick at ffs. Waahhh this fictional movie isnt based in reality! Rabble rabble! “Journalists” chya ok buzzfeed/guardian

Its just a film 🤷🏻‍♂️

Oh, here we go

Leftists losing their shit, only adds to the majesty of the masterpiece.

Oh hey look, a lovely pic of a mirror here for you Guardian!

Stop the bullshit, you don’t like it because it shows up charlatans in the press like you and how you contribute to the degradation of society and the individuals in it

Great cinematography though, remove the Lego fandom and it's still a brutally cool movie. Just get over it.

They actually say in the article that the move should focus on wealth inequality. Lol

THANK YOU

Movies about fictional killer clowns are usually not based in reality.., unless you're 5 yrs old.

It's a film that should not have been made

The guardian is mentally ill

U mad bro

It's just a movie

It’s a film...and an amazing one at that, one that we’ll still be talking about long after all the professional critics have moved on...it marks a turn in mainstream Hollywood film making and certainly one for the better...

Dangerous information weird..... I thought that the Guarden's socialist propaganda was the only dangerous information out there...who knew

No, it really isn’t. It’s scarily accurate.

As someone who actually suffers from mental illnesses - Fuck off. The only ones conflating mental illness with violence are you tosspots with your freudian slips.

Cry more

AKA This film was too sympathetic to men & the problems men go through

Is there any greater threat to humanity than this movie? This movie makes Climate Change seem like a broken radon detector (in a house with 3 radon detectors). Stop this movie before it murders all possible life in the cosmos! WE NEED MORE CAUTIONARY ARTICLES!! AGHHHHH

I don't think he kills people because he's mentally ill. He kills people because he's treated like complete shit dumbasses. Do you know that he would have snapped if he'd received the treatment he needed and was treated kindly? You're so thick it hurts.

A pretend bloke called Superman flies. It's pretend.

ECT was a barbaric act to be consigned to the dustbin of history alongside lobotomy. Lame article.

Thank goodness it's a work of fiction

It isn’t real. It is a made up story about a comic book character.

The gig is up, people like the movie.

You're wrong & the film's fine :)

Also, Gotham is not a real place.

Why (insert thing) is bad and we realised first

ITS A COMIC BOOK ORIGIN STORY NOT A DEGREE COURSE!

its pretty spot on as a person with mental illness

Give up, boys. The movie is doing fine. I don't know how much Disney has paid for you, but it's not worth it anymore
