Weight loss: Working out on an empty tummy helps you burn fat faster

Scientists say their findings suggest changing exercise times can make “profound and positive changes” to overall health.Half were given breakfast before cycling on a stationary bike three times a week and half after.The University of Bath and University of Birmingham boffins found those who delayed eating until after their workout fared best.

They also had lower insulin levels, which indicates better control of blood sugar and means the body can use more fat as fuel.Dr Javier Gonzalez, from Bath, said: “Our results suggest that changing the timing of when you eat in relation to when you exercise can bring about profound and positive changes to your overall health.

“Importantly, whilst this didn’t have any effect on weight loss, it did dramatically improve their overall health.
