The chair of Victoria's mental health royal commission describes the suicide rate among sexually and gender diverse people as totally unacceptable.

The chair of Victoria's mental health royal commission has described the suicide rate among sexually and gender diverse people as"totally unacceptable".There is a level of distrust for mainstream mental health services among some sexually and gender diverse people, the commission is told

The inquiry today heard lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and gender diverse, intersex and queer communities have the highest suicide rate of any group in Australia. National statistics show young people from LGBTQI communities are between five and 11 times more likely to attempt suicide, while almost half of transgender young people report making at least one attempt on their life.

The commissioner put the under-reporting down to shame and stigma and said organisations and individuals had a role to play to improve that.

I'd reckon Intersex people must do it tough. Sometimes its LGBTQI sometimes its just LGBTQ..

fear of what?

🤪

If 100 % of them aren't reporting mental illness then they're underreporting.

🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

Oh ffs...!!!

this is why it's laughable that this government wants to eradicate suicide. what a joke. they contribute to mental illness far more than they alleviate it.

Oh leave us alone.

Under reporting mental illness..No shit sherlock. A two year old could have told you that and i will tell you larpers something else, they are not as scared as our children i can give you the big tip.

What rubbish, we have extremely supportive lgbti front line heathcare workers! There are lots of gay psychologists and doctors. High rates of mental health reporting is bad & low rates are bad too? Can’t win 🤦🏼‍♂️

Maybe they are suffering MENTAL ILLNESS caused by attempting to DEFY NATURE & their BRAINS are not coping with it

Sounds like it could happen to anyone, not just LGBTQITTIEZ!! 🤯🤯🤯

There are LGBTQI doctors & other health professionals, so why would LGBTQI under-report? Also the story, yet again, mixes up people who self harm with people who kill themselves, they are two groups with only a 10% overlap & mental illnesses are genetic, you can't blame society.

Must need more money. More money for activists groups. More money for the victim industry. More. More. More. $$$

What BS is this? AStrongerOZ

Yet, on top of the huge stress of having a child in hospital for months with few answers, we noticed that many friends dropped away.' Sorry to hear your story here I must say though that mental illness is tough on all of us. Many of us handle it by simply not responding. My sister had mental issues & most of my family slowly distanced theirselves from her. This is a sad but natural human reaction to the unknown So sad to read this .... it could be such a different outcome with the right programs and care .... Mental health issues are very difficult to treat, lots of overlapping greys. The families are the real heroes.
