The FDA approved a treatment for a genetic disease called spinal muscular atrophy that causes infants' muscles to waste away, potentially killing them before age 2. The price tag? $2.125 million for a one-time treatment.

And then came the price tag: $2.125 million for a one-time treatment. The gene therapy, called Zolgensma, will be marketed by AveXis, whose parent company is Novartis. Eli Lilly's lower-priced insulin goes on sale amid drug price debate"Today's approval marks another milestone in the transformational power of gene and cell therapies to treat a wide range of diseases," Dr. Ned Sharpless, the FDA's acting commissioner, said in a statement Friday.

In a CNBC op-ed last week, Novartis CEO Dr. Vas Narasimhan called for a new pricing and payment model for one-time treatments like Zolgensma, versus other treatments with costs that accumulate over time."Health-care systems, however, are accustomed to treating chronic diseases with a pay-as-you-go model, spreading costs over months and years," Narasimhan said.

Corporate pigs gonna claim it costs that much to make it , wonder how much FDA got ?

Pero se hacen o son idiotas ?

That must be th US CITIZEN price.

Outrageous. Only the elite will get the treatment.

Basically only the top .1% of our population can actually afford that. With that price tag you couldn’t even get a loan to pay for it. That’s beyond ridiculous. Big Pharma in this country is an atrocity

2.1 Million?! That is outrageous and just plain evil.

So you can't legalise Euthanasia but put a price tag of $2.125 Mil on a medicine. How's that different from not having a cure ?

Novartis This is outrageous even for Big Pharma. This is exploitation, price gouging and extortion. It goes to show that money is more important than human life, than sick children.

Stupid price

Wonder, with kind of cost, if 99% of the parents of children affected, will ever be able to afford this treatment unless its highly subsidised by the govt!!!!

Quick, quack call Zamboni or Andrew Wakefield. See how effective Honeywell security is?

What’s the good of approving a treatment like this if 99% of people can’t afford it?

It couldn’t possibly cost that much to produce this drug, you are paying for what it does. My God no humanity left in this money hungry country.

that is some bullllshit price tag!!!!

Outrageous! I understand these research companies need recoup, but who is paying this? This is enough to start bankruptcy in health insurance! What about those who have to pay 20% of the copay cost? This isn’t affordable for the average Joe

It is still 'easier' to pay for Spinraza in smaller chunks than a 2 million dollar deal

And this is why American Policies SUCK! realDonaldTrump

I thought Trump said drug prices were going to come down.

It’s a shame when treatments, medicines that can help save people’s lives are made into money-making machine. The purpose of years of research, donations to fund it and the passion to find the solution are all but lost whereisthelove

It is better to die then ending up dying to pay such ransom. I think such exorbitant amount is huge for even millionaires, lest someone loot or win a lottery of million dollars. So doesn't make any sense to even think of opting for this rare medicine... Who said life's cheap

It’s not even a cure its a treatment how affordable that’s ridiculous

CNN IS A FAKE NEWS

That’s a crazy price for life WOW

So for the rich then as with everything.

$20 Canadian 🇨🇦

Considering SMA is closely related to ALS in adults....commonly know as Lou Gehrig's disease...... I wonder if this treatment will also be modified to possibly provide an effective therapy for those affected individuls?

Thoughts GOP You’re all about prolife. Is this what your prolife has to offer?

Approximately 500 infants in the U.S. per yr have spinal muscular atrophy an inherited disorder stemming from a defective gene that leads to the death of nerve cells responsible for moving muscles like breathing. Gene therapy price tag $2M BUT they will provide payment plans. 👀

So would this be covered by single payer system?

Everyone, calm down. The “price tag” is almost certainly referring to WAC (wholesale acquisition cost). Next to no one actually pays WAC. It is a functionally meaningless number in respect to the average patient.

Designer Therapy for the filthy rich and their spawn. THIS is not the practice of Medicine, but Extortion.

Covered by insurance?

How does America have the ant abortion laws it has and then produces a cure that would save a life but only if you have enough money. That’s as twisted a set of morals any nation can have.

that is some bullllshit!!!!

And THIS which you REFUSE to COVER AT ALL!

Seriously?

How much to develop? Would be nice to know

And currently A$14.95 in Australia!

CNN Lays Off Almost Entire Division, Surprises Employees As ‘Crazy Rumor’ Comes True
