Wait times for elective surgery have ballooned to their worst since records began. 9News

Hip replacement, Flinders Medical Centre, South Australia -"One of the things about saying something is elective is that it probably doesn't take into account the impact these problems have on a person's life," AMA NSW president Dr Kean-Seng Lim said."We need to look at some of the underlying factors," he said.

"That means previous injuries, overweight and obesity, and also strength factors, and these are things we could address if we wanted to look at the system as a whole."But he said there are ways patients could help themselves as they endured the wait for surgery. "You need to talk to your local doctor, your local GP who knows you best, and they can advise you on whether they could refer you to someone else for the surgery, or to go somewhere else and be able to maintain your health as best as possible," he said.
