Health advocates were dismayed at the recent legal opinion rendered by the Department of Justice that makes it acceptable for the Department of Social Welfare and Development and other government agencies to receive donations from the tobacco industry.

They argued it violates the government’s obligations under the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control , recognized by the Supreme Court as part of the law. “We have to be careful not to open doors for the tobacco industry to corrupt our bureaucracy,” he warned.
