WITH the start of the rainy season, the Department of Health should swiftly roll out the influenza or flu vaccine for elderly people, a vaccine expert said.In an awareness campaign launched this week, Rontgene Solante, infectious diseases specialist, former member of the Vaccine Expert Panel, and lead convener of the Raising Awareness on Influenza to Support Elderly Coalition, emphasized the need for timely vaccination, highlighting the underreporting of influenza deaths in the country.
Solante said the Philippines was lagging in vaccination coverage and was far from the target of 75 percent vaccine coverage recommended by the World Health Organization for at-risk populations.'Only 8.81 percent of adults ages 60 and older in the Philippines were vaccinated against influenza in 2022, and one of the many identified barriers to vaccination is that vaccines sometimes arrive too late for adequate protection against the current strains,' he said.
