The parliamentary assistant to Health Minister Christine Elliott said Wednesday that the government is reviewing OHIP's Out-of-Country Travellers Program as part of efforts to address the province's $11.7 billion deficit.
Martin said the program offers limited travel insurance coverage -- paying out as little as five cents on the dollar in some instances -- and encouraged people to purchase additional travel insurance when they go abroad. The Tories posted the proposed change on the province's regulatory website Wednesday, offering the public six days to comment on it. The change would come into effect Oct. 1 if the government decides to proceed with it.
In her 2018 report, Auditor General Bonnie Lysyk said the Ministry of Health processed an average of 88,000 out-of-country claims per year over a five year period and paid an average of $127 per claim.
So offer mandatory “free healthcare” and offer services only accessible in Toronto? Nice
$400.00 towards a $400,000 US hospital bill doesn't cut it. Travel outside the country buy insurance coverage or pay the piper!
partly is a fun word when a USA hospital bills $400 for a pair of Tylenol ... get travel insurance people
Why do they ask for public input when they are going to do what they want no matter whether the public agrees or not.
This isn’t that bad of an idea. I didn’t know we had OHIP travel coverage
That’s a good idea. The govt has to start somewhere to deal with the massive debt. People can - and should - buy travel insurance.
Are u kidding me. What are they tring to do now. Stop people from traveling or will that be a pleasure only givin to the rich that can afford it if they have a medical emergency.
Who voted ford in anyway. What did they expect from this guy.
Not a bad thing reduces provincial costings and ensures that travellers purchase the proper level of travel insurance to ensure their personal safety and medical protections!
Yeah, I don’t think I would disagree with this cut, way more than some of the other cuts proposed. If we have the money for vacation we have the $20 needed to purchase travel insurance through CAA, and some work places cover travel insurance as well.
Time to mark all these ford puppies for defeat!
BREAKING: Ontarians to cut the heads off PC COCKASS MEMBERS. Now those are cuts we can all agree on
Who knew there was travel insurance with OHIP
Can Doug pick us up in his new van? Or maybe run the TTC above Hwy 17...? Just asking. 🙏
Good. Anyone with a brain who travels outside of Canada purchases medical insurance anyway.
fordnation on this I agree, as long as they continue to cover the cost of medical in the states for surgeries not preformed here. Medical need NOT elective!
This is being done 'For the People'.
Excellent news, fordnation! People who can't afford out-of-country travel should NOT have to subsidize those who can, so dumping this 'benefit' is great. Let the users pay.
Seems reasonable OHIP only covers a small portion anyway, the Auditor General has previously pointed out the saving to be had and $2.8 million/yr is substantial when deficits are in the billions It's not someone else's responsibility to look after you
Let’s fix hallway medicine and hire more nurses in Ontario & Cut OHIP coverage for travellers outside of Canada. Let the vacationers purchase their own travel insurance. Thanks fordnation
Saw fordnation out in full force again today.
Unbelievable- gouge gouge gouge.
Apparently when for decades Ontario using IOUs to cover 10s of billions a year in shortfalls, was an unsustainable funding model.
Big deal. Our taxes should not subsidize vacations.
WOW! what will he be cutting next or will he just give the Ontario people more alcohol to drink so we don't know better! Why doesn't he start giving things with our TAXES instead of taking away?
I love it. All the old haters are screwed. Sorry, not sorry.
