, the PCs want to end the Out of Country Travellers Program run by OHIP.
The program covered sudden emergency medical expenses provided the condition was unexpected and arose while a patient was outside of Canada, to the tune of $400 per day for intensive care in hospital, $200 per day for lower levels of care and $50 per day for outpatient services. The Ford government says those reimbursed under the program received five per cent of their total medical costs on average, and OHIP itself believes 90 per cent of travellers who fall ill abroad already purchase travel medical insurance.
“Ontarians who decide to travel outside of Canada may continue to seek the best, most comprehensive coverage from travel insurance companies who already cover 94% of reimbursement for eligible costs related to emergency care services out of country,” the notice of amendment states “This proposal does not affect current publicly funded health care coverage for Ontarians travelling in other parts of Canada.

To be honest, this makes sense - & I'm not a Conservative. I travel twice a year & I purchase Travel Insurance because OHIP does not cover enough. $400 won't cover anything you need. So, why not save that portion of OHIP & put it towards other more important health care coverage?

It covers a fraction and should be ended. Any responsible person buys private insurance. If you don’t and you get say a 25k hospital bill abroad, the government paying 5% won’t be much help. I think Ontarians are misinformed and believe they are covered much more by OHIP

Take it from an experienced traveler with medical needd. This is a good thing it will make reimbursement from private travel insurance faster. Previously you had to wait two months for OHIP to send you the $200 and only then could you claim the rest.

I don't have an issue with this. Currently if you seek medical care in certain countries Ohip will reimburse you up to $400. That isn't enough coverage to seek any medical attention outside of Canada. If your travelling you need travellers insurance of some sort regardless.
