Summer is nearly here and a refreshing dip in the pool, lake or ocean can bring much needed relief from the summer heat. However, not only is the water effective in helping us cool off, but it can also prove to be a great tool for seniors to get a great low-impact workout. As a physiotherapist, I’m all for finding fun ways for seniors to stay fit, and aquatic therapy is a top pick, especially in these warmer months.Working out in the water is very gentle on the body.
– Heart healthy – Getting your heart rate up can be easier in the pool. Exercises often feel less exhausting but still work your body effectively. This can allow more intense work over a longer period to be better tolerated, which increases the benefits to our heart and lung health. – Pool walking – Simple but effective, walking in water is great for your legs and heart and you can do it in the shallow end .
– Arm swings – These are like your regular arm circles but in water. They are great for building upper body strength with minimal strain.
