By: ETX Daily UpWith some 20 million cases and 9.7 million deaths in 2022, cancer is one of the world’s leading causes of death. And the situation looks set to worsen over the coming years, and decades, according to projections by the World Health Organisation .

This is the conclusion of a paper published by Oxford University Press in the journal Biology Methods & Protocols, highlighting recent work by researchers at Cambridge University and Imperial College London. They trained artificial intelligence to examine DNA methylation patterns and identify 13 types of cancer – including breast, liver, lung and prostate cancer – from non-cancerous tissue. This was achieved with an accuracy of 98.2%.

The scientists point out, however, that, at this stage, the model is based on tissue samples, and that further research – and AI training and testing – is needed on a more diverse collection of biopsy samples before clinical use would be feasible. This is not the first time that researchers have considered artificial intelligence as a source of hope in treating cancer and improving patient survival.
