Health Sciences North kicked off its recent annual general meeting by showcasing a unique style of health care that is a first of its kind in Canada in providing care over the "vast distances" that make up Northeastern Ontario.
"Tonight, we're celebrating 10 years of the virtual critical care program, a pioneering model of care developed right here at Health Sciences North." Once that happens the local health care provider is connected by video with specialists at HSN who can help stabilize the patient, set up a plan of care and, if necessary, make plans to transport the patient out to a larger care centre, said Renee Fillier, virtual critical care coordinator and nurse clinician at Health Sciences North.
The video outlined health emergencies in James Bay coastal communities where no doctors are available, to situations such as the West Parry Sound Health Centre that has to care for some residents who live on islands in Georgian Bay. In those cases if a patient becomes seriously ill, the Coast Guard would be contacted to co-ordinate with the land ambulance just to get the patient to the hospital.
"The Northeastern Ontario Virtual Critical Care was the first of its kind in Canada back in 2014," said Fillier. "And today this model of care has been cut and paste not just throughout Ontario but throughout Canada and internationally.”
