Why the U.S. Surgeon General Wants a Warning Label for Social Media

“It is time to require a surgeon general’s warning label on social media platforms, stating that social media is associated with significant mental health harms for adolescents,” he wrote inMurthy is calling for a periodic notification that reminds users of the risks. “A surgeon general’s warning label, which requires congressional action, would regularly remind parents and adolescents that social media has not been proved safe,” he wrote.

Murthy believes that a similar warning could change behaviors around social media, and noted that tobacco studies show that warning labels can increase awareness and change behavior. Last year, Murthy released a public health advisory on social media’s mental health impacts that detailed specific recommendations for policymakers, platforms and the public to make social media safer for kids.
