'Like paying someone else to go on a diet': Labor's carbon permit policy attacked from both sides auspol

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten is counting on a surge in spending on international carbon permits to meet an election pledge to grow the economy by 23 per cent under his climate change policy, sparking new attacks from the Coalition and the Greens over the scheme.

"In terms of offsets, we allow companies to purchase offsets if they need to, if they can't meet their carbon emission reductions by changes in productivity in their workplaces."The policy is at odds with the Coalition's objections to international permits but also risks a clash with the Greens because it could lead to companies buying permits rather than working harder to reduce their own emissions.

"It's like paying someone else to go on a diet for you while you keep eating burgers and chips," Mr Bandt said. Mr Shorten disputed an estimate by Dr Brian Fisher of BAEconomics that the permits would cost $472 billion over ten years but did not put forward an alternative cost.

So Australian companies will be forced to buy Nigerian Carbon Permits. What a complete waste of money and enormous cost to our economy.

You mean attacked by all sides of the Liberals? Is that meant to be news or opinion? Probably the latter, after-all its carried by the SydneyMorningSky so it's just Murdocrassy propaganda. auspol ausvotes

Labor candidate for WA seat of Curtin pulls out of federal election race over controversial commentsLabor's candidate for the West Australian seat of Curtin, Melissa Parke, pulls out of the federal election race after reports she told a public meeting that Israel's treatment of Palestinians was worse than the South African system of apartheid. Controversial to who? Libs breathe sigh of relief Day 2 and we see Labor already stifling any hint of personal opinion from being freely expressed by their candidates. Similarly, neither will they stick up for an Australian journalist who's won the Walkely when he'd unjustly being prosecuted. I'm voting Green!
