Dan Walker has paid an emotional tribute to his “inspirational” friend and former rugby league star Rob Burrow.
Dan developed a close friendship with the former sports star when he interviewed him when he was a presenter on BBC Breakfast, and after news of Rob’s sad death broke, the 5 News took to social media to share a heartbreaking tribute to his pal. “He was the little fella who made a massive impact on the pitch and an even bigger one off it,” Dan began in a post on Twitter /X.
Dan teamed up with Rob over the years to help raise awareness of MND, and in April, he presented a special Strictly Come Dancing-themed ball, alongside former BBC Breakfast colleague Sally Nugent, in support of the Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease and other MND causes. Celebrities including Helen Skelton took part in the Burrow Strictly Ball which was held at the Blackpool Tower Ballroom, and raised vital funds for the MND organisations.
Meanwhile, Prince William said in a personal statement: "A legend of rugby league, Rob Burrow had a huge heart. He taught us that 'in a world full of adversity, we must dare to dream'. Catherine and I send our love to Lindsey, Jackson, Maya and Macy." During the Britain's Got Talent final, contestant Alex Mitchell halted his performance to say: "About an hour ago before I came on stage I got the sad news and it'd be remiss of me not to mention it.
