Galleri blood test can detect more than 50 types of cancerHIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ohio - It’s a blood test that can detect cancer before symptoms even appear. UH Seidman Cancer Center is giving the first-of-a-kind test in Northeast Ohio to first responders, a new tool to put out a health fire.
“More and more plastics are being used, in furniture, in carpeting, everything within our household,” said Highland Heights Assistant Fire Chief Bill Bernhard. “So when we go into a fire, there’s a lot of carcinogens that we’re seeing because the plastics, when they burn, they release a lot of different chemicals.
“This test is really crucial for us,” echoed Bernhart. “It takes the weight off your shoulders. There’s the question if you want to know bad news or not. I would rather know and get out in front of it.” The Galleri test is a simple blood draw and although results are not definitive, it can send an alarm to doctors, giving them a head start in fighting cancer.
“It detects over fifty cancers so it’s really exciting because the best way to really treat cancer is to detect it early,” said Dr. Winter. “Until this point, we really didn’t have a test, a blood test, that could detect cancer and so many cancers.”“The data so far are very promising that we can save lives using this test,” said Winter.First responders from the Austintown Fire Department in the Youngstown area will receive the testing next.
