Researchers in the US said almost all of the people who carry two copies of the APOE4 gene variant, known as APOE4 homozygotes, are likely to develop signs of the neurological condition.

Scientists have discovered a new genetic variant of Alzheimer's disease that raises the hopes that people could be diagnosed early.

Published in Nature Medicine, the study's conclusions draw on clinical data from upwards of 10,000 participants and pathological information from over 3,000 brain donors. He highlighted the significance of the discovery, noting that APOE4 homozygotes makeup about 2% to 3% of the general population. APOE, another gene linked to Alzheimer's, has three variants: APOE2, APOE3, and APOE4, with each person inheriting two copies of APOE, one from each parent.

The current study found that most individuals with two APOE4 variants showed traces of the disease by age 55, compared to those carrying other gene versions like the APOE3 variant.
