Extending hours for alcohol sales associated with health risks, city's top doctor says

In February, city council voted in favour of asking the provincial government to give restaurants the green light to sell alcoholic drinks starting at 9 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, two hours sooner than what is currently permitted.

“Loblaws can sell wine at 9 a.m., a business two blocks away can’t sell a glass of wine until eleven,” Fletcher, who represents Ward 14, said earlier this year. “They would just like to be able to give a glass of wine or a mimosa to their customers coming in for brunch.” She noted that while the number of Ontario adults consuming alcohol has remained stable over the past 20 years, the amount of alcohol consumed per person has “increased significantly.”

“Serious concerns related to this increase and to the social acceptance of alcohol consumption were raised by Canada's Chief Public Health Officer in the 2018 Report on the State of Public Health in Canada.”“Evidence has shown that increasing the availability of alcohol , is associated with increased alcohol consumption and alcohol-related health and social harms.”

If you wash down a toasted western with a glass of wine you have bigger problems than you realize

Who the hell want's to drink at 9am.

Well...city's 'top doctor', people can decide what's best for themselves. Thanks for you professional opinion, but my professional opinion is...I'll do what I want.

Absolutely rubbish

All in all, it's a choice to walk in and buy alcohol. Nothing to do with time extension

I don't agree

Ho sure i agree, even healthier to those that dont like booze at all and hopefully fewer drunk drivers weaving on the road it may save a few lifes. Lots of happiness after 11 pm.

Ottawa Public Health warns about highly infectious measles case in cityOttawa Public Health is urging people to take precautions following a confirmed case of measles in the city. Makes me happy I had an MMR antibody count done a while back last time there was a scare. Not that I will ever chance it, but at least I'm covered if there are more idiots out there. If a vaccine is available, and declined, all health care costs should be out-of-pocket. Anti-vaxxers have now become a financial liability to our already strained health care system.
