Maine Gov. Janet Mills signs legislation to strengthen public safety and Maine's mental health system. on Friday that expands background checks, makes changes to the “yellow flag” law, and strengthens the state's mental health system in the wake of thereflects conversations she had with people and organizations across the state after the shooting on Oct. 25. Eighteen people were killed and 13 others were hurt.

According to Mills, the new law improves Maine’s extreme risk protection order law, expands checks against the National Instant Criminal Background Check System for advertised sales, and incentivizes checks for unadvertised sales. Republicans in the state remain opposed to the bill, specifically because of the expanded background check proposal, said the Maine House of Representatives Republican leader, Rep. Billy Bob Faulkingham, on Friday.
