Congressional Republicans showed little appetite for a fight during campaign season on a politically perilous issue.

By John Wagner John Wagner National reporter leading The Post's breaking political news team Email Bio Follow April 2 at 8:12 AM President Trump signaled Monday night that he will not press for a vote on a bill to replace the Affordable Care Act until after next year’s elections, apparently heeding warnings from fellow Republicans about the perils of such a fight during campaign season.

Congressional Republicans were caught off guard by Trump’s rapid shift to focus on health care last week, which was set off by his abrupt decision to direct the Justice Department to intervene in a federal court case seeking to eliminate the ACA in its entirety on constitutional grounds.Trump later showed up a Senate Republican luncheon where he declared that they should be the “party of health care” and asked for assistance in writing a new bill.

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Charles E. Grassley , whose panel would be central to any such debate, also said last week that there was no plan to move forward. — Donald J. Trump April 2, 2019 ....are developing a really great HealthCare Plan with far lower premiums & deductibles than ObamaCare. In other words it will be far less expensive & much more usable than ObamaCare. Vote will be taken right after the Election when Republicans hold the Senate & win......

This probably excites Trump voters. Probably feels like a game show for them, and they get to play along. It's Let's Make A Deal for Dummies.

Misleads and lies once again to the American People!!! It just keeps giving and going!!! When is it going to be enough of this fraud!!! Wake up America before it is to late!!!

Does this really surprise anyone but Trumpsters that believe every lying word that comes out of his mouth?

Action2getherNJ Is that like the middle class tax cut he promised right before the midterms?

Anti-Trump House of Representatives will ALWAYS vote against Trump/Republican plan no matter what. Sell the plan, vote Dems out in 2020, pass the plan. Sound judgement DJT!

Of course

Ok. So if that is the case, why wouldnt you consider that an opportunity to use it as an election point. Put his plan up against your plan. Get it out there and own it. The good news for Democrats is that their base generally hates to think too hard about details & realities.

Nixon pulled the same stunt in 68 and again in 72. Had a plan to end the war. after the election I'll tell ya all about it. Uh huh.

Even if his plan solved all of the problems in the world, Dem's would still vote no. It would be a waste of time.

He's lying

realdonaldtrump HouseGOP SenateGOP Only a few days after declaring the GOP the Party of Healthcare? Oh, so sad! I was just getting accustomed to this new name...🙄🙄🙄 Without a sketck of a plan to replace ObamaCare, I assume he'll have the decency to punt on Court actions?

What health care bill is that?

Paper tiger trying to distract from mueller report that has not been seen yet trouble ahead

Great Plan: Re-elect me, then I’ll tell you what I am going to do!

My goodness. To think that such a vastly superior plan to the ACA is going to wait almost two years?! I have no words. Oh wait - yes, I do: Suck it, Trump. And suck it good. TrumpFamilyPrisonThanksgiving2021

With Dems controlling the House he knows any plan won’t even get a listen.

morgfair But in the meantime, the GOP will still ask the courts to take away your existing protections, even though no replacement plan is in sight.

Let’s hear what the Republicans have so far so I can decide if I want Obamacare replaced.

That should be enough to tell people what the GOP is planning for healthcare is uuuuugely baaaaaadly!, even realDonaldTrump isn't dumb enough to make it public.

Another CON GAME by the CON ARTIST!!!!!

What about th plan he touted on campaign trail? Wait that was a lie?

Again, Trumpanzee is willingly jeopardizing the lives of Americans for his own horrendous agenda.

No, this is Unacceptable.

More words from the presidunce. Just words. No truth, no reason, no logic.

In other words: Obama lives for ever

He has no plan B

Because he knows by then ppl stuck in the rotten plan will welcome what Republicans offer with ope arms.

How many years have the Republicans had to come up with an alternative? Paul Ryan's mantra results in 'nothing'. Now Trump wants in have courts invalidate ACA and wait for 2 more years to put another plan in place. Perfect for GOP base

Because it’s a con job. Always was.

“Sooooo easy to fix...”

Shocker. 🙄

Why arent you covering this

The GOP have been touting a 'replacement' plan for 9 years now. Still waiting. Always 'repeal,' but never a 'replace.' Their 'plan' is like Trump's erectile dysfunction... a lot of hype but falls flat in the end. healthcareforall ACA

Call it what it is. Trump lies to his base who will believe anything he says.

Lets punt Trump outta office.

Screw him.

This is more of a National Emergency than anything....

a lot of punting this season

Yeah, taking health care away from millions of people is probably better done after you dupe them into voting for you again. VetsAgainstTrump MedicareForAll

“I will have more flexibility after the next election”. Sound familiar? Calling out politicians for being politicians would have been helpful starting several Admins ago. (And some of them now) You know, comparison reasons!!

Cuz no one will draw him a picture! 🖍🖍🖍🙄 Thanks the Gods for now! ✌️❤️

And the three Mexican countries will pay for it! Believe me!

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Monday shows that 51% of Likely U.S. Voters approve of President Trump’s job performance

Because that way he can fill the heads of his loyal sheep with empty promises, and they'll be dumb enough to believe him, and then he can screw them over while they applaud and cheer.

Because he don't how to fix it.

Trump punts morals as well.

So much for the Party of Healthcare.

H*A*Y*R*..OLSUN

Needs a boost

So he'll never have to deal with it.

Because the Republicans have no plan and never have. Their only plan is “get rid of whatever Obama did”.

😱🙀😱🙀😱🙀💩😱🙀😱🙀😱

He was losing bigly

He wants his incumbency 😂😂😂😂😂

Every con man in history has promised “the check is in the mail”

So much winning, I can't even...
