A high proportion of popular supermarket produce in the UK, including strawberries and tomatoes, contain harmful 'forever chemicals' known as poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). These chemicals are sprayed on fruit and vegetables during the farming process to protect them from fungicides and insects, but they can accumulate in the body and have been linked to health issues such as cancer and developmental disorders. Experts suggest it is almost impossible to completely eliminate exposure to these chemicals.

So-called ‘forever chemicals’ are made up of 10,000 chemicals; a group known as poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and branded ‘forever’ for their ability to persist in theand accumulate in the body. “A more direct way of becoming exposed to them is consuming them through food, but they are also in the clothes we put on our skin, and in the water that we drink.
