The proportion of visits for a mental health diagnosis almost doubled among adolescents and young adults even before the COVID-19 pandemic, especially among males.

Mental health-related outpatient visits and use of psychotropic medications among adolescents and young adults increased significantly between 2006 and 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic, a new study found. The increase was especially high among males. The analysis included 2006-2019 data from the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey , a probability survey of visits to office-based physicians engaged in direct patient care.

Using diagnostic codes, researchers identified outpatient visits for psychiatric or substance use disorders made by adolescents and young adults during the study period. And they categorized psychotropic medications associated with visits into seven classes: Antidepressants; antipsychotics; stimulants; anxiolytics, sedatives, and hypnotics; mood stabilizers; medications for substance use; and antiadrenergic agents.
