by Utah Department of Health and Human Servicest comes to our health. The key when trying to make a change is remembering that your health is individual to you and so the strategies you use may be different than the ones the people around you use. If something doesn't work, don’t give up! Be kind to yourself and try something new to achieve your goals.
A few goals that I recommend to people when they want to change their health habits include eating more fruits and vegetables, being intentional about the lunch they eat, and drinking more water. Let’s talk about some strategies you can try if you want to achieve these goals. The general recommendation to eat 5 fruits and vegetables each day can be overwhelming when you’re first starting—this is normal for everyone.
When you’re trying fruits and vegetables, think about what types work best for you. There aren’t any differences in nutrition between frozen and fresh fruits and vegetables. In fact, some research shows that frozen fruits and vegetables have more nutrients than fresh ones! Canned fruits and vegetables are still very nutritious, even though they’re more processed than fresh or frozen ones.
Another thing to consider when adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet is eating ones that you like. If you like what you eat, then you’re more likely to eat it, especially with fruits and vegetables. What matters the most is that you’re eating them, not that you’re eating them in the “healthiest” way. So if you like a dip like ranch or hummus with your veggies, then eat them that way! Try different salad dressings to see if there is a type that you prefer.
There are a lot of things you can do to try and drink more water. Some people like apps or alarms on their phones that remind them to drink throughout the day, and some people like water bottles that track how much water they’ve drank. Another factor that will help you drink more water is to make drinking water fun. Choose a water bottle that you like and that makes it easy for you to drink from—personally, I like water bottles with straws.
