The initiative centered on the importance of early detection and prevention of colon cancer.) - In a collaborative effort to combat colorectal cancer, Franklin Primary Health Center and members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority hosted a health awareness event.

“This event is important because colorectal cancer is the leading cause of death of men and women in the United States. It’s also the leading cause of death of men under the age of 50,” said Tamekia Cunningham-Abrams, Chief Nurse Practitioner at Franklin Primary Health Center. Scheduled screenings, including colorectal screenings, COVID-19 and flu vaccines, blood pressure checks, BMI assessments, dental screenings, and vision tests, were available to attendees. Tamekia Cunningham-Abrams, Chief Nurse Practitioner at Franklin Primary Health Center, emphasized the significance of the event.

“Colorectal cancer is of significant concern here in the South. In Alabama there is reported to be a 42 percent incidents of cancer rate — of colorectal cancer in Alabama. In Mobile, it’s as high as 46 percent. So it’s important that the community stays informed.”“It’s really good to get checked to see if you have any chronic issues, if you have any family history or anything like that,” said Smith.
