The family of a special needs man expresses frustration after waiting 17 hours for an ambulance to arrive following a seizure. The man's mother was extremely worried and called for emergency help, but the ambulance did not arrive until the next day. The man, who has learning difficulties, had never experienced a seizure before.

The family of a special needs man who suffered a “terrifying” seizure has hit out at health care resourcing after an ambulance arrived 17-hours after a 999 call.

“She was absolutely terrified. She was just out of her mind with worry on the phone to me - and it was just ‘can you come quickly’.“I had a mad race to Castledawson because I thought well at least I can give him some CPR if needs be. I had just got into my pyjamas so I just fired shoes on me and drove from Maghera.”“Whatever way he had fell, he banged his head so he had a bruise and a bump on his temple and his eyebrow was bleeding,” she added.“She phoned them just before 7.

“I had my first aid and they were told at midnight that I had checked him over and moved him onto the sofa.” “We got him to hospital and got him through triage really quickly but the crowds in the hospital were mental. Michael has since been discharged from hospital to wait for more scans and tests to provide a diagnosis.

“My brother deserved better, my family deserved better and the people of Northern Ireland deserve better.”
