When Musqua-LeBlanc objected to opening the pouch and suggested putting it through the X-ray, a security supervisor threatened to remove her from the airport

Geri Musqua-LeBlanc, a First Nations elder who lives in Halifax, was not even planning to bring her traditional herbal medicine pouch on her holiday to the Dominican Republic.

Musqua-LeBlanc thinks the problem is wider than just her own experience, and hopes that it can be improved, but there was confusion Monday over who was supposed to get in touch with whom. Musqua-LeBlanc has not filed a formal complaint, but was expecting CATSA to contact her for details. CATSA was similarly waiting for her to contact them.

Musqua-LeBlanc is a survivor of the St. Philip’s Indian Residential School at the Keeseekoose First Nation in eastern Saskatchewan. Today, retired from the public service, she is a co-ordinator of the Elders in Residence program at Dalhousie University in Halifax. This rule particularly applies to the eagle feather she sometimes carries, as eagles are meant to be above humans. But Musqua-LeBlanc also said that certain medicines are not meant to be kept under people, and that menstruating women passengers would similarly desecrate the medicine.

Rules are rules, no exceptions.

And what? They've never heard of sending stuff you don't want to have to open at airport security ahead via courier? StupidStory

They also ‘desecrated’ my sacred m&m’s.

Security is security no special priveledge .

Oh give it a fucking break enough is enough. Just call Trudeau and ask for $$$$$$$$$$$ will that suffice?

Go HRC route. It worked against the landlord with the muslim tenant. Landlord didn't take his shoes off.

Then don’t fly...no exception to the rules

Guess she shouldn’t fly with it

“Indigenous spirituality is broadly ignored and rejected in civil society, especially airport security.”...what planet is this. I’ve boarded the wrong spaceship.

Next time take the traditional airlines

Just flew out of Ottawa today. Lady in front was flagged for having more than. 100ml of liquid in her carry on. Security officer politely and carefully offered her alternatives ranging from repacking her checked bag to spilling out excess amt. Veru respectful.

If you don't want something inspected when you cross the border or board an aircraft then a) don't take the someting with you or b) don't try to cross the border or board an aircraft. Get it through your head; you're not special. You're a Canadian like everyone else.

Poorly trained and inconsiderate yes. Discriminatory, I seriously doubt it. BTW, what is the relevance of her residential school experience?

Welcome to the club. Life is tough in this day and age of hyper-security.

I read the article first. Shall I play the world's tiniest violin for you? Fxxk off!

Screw her and her religion.

I hope she lawyer's up and sues. She would win. The only way canuks learn, when they have to pay legal damages and punitive damages.

Thankfully the airline personnel don’t discriminate, all personal effect have to be available for inspection. There are alternatives but they have to pay the special freight.

Simple solution, dont fly, they won't bother you. Not exactly a traditional practice.

Wow. What isn’t “sacred” for a FN person?

Am I supposed to actually feel bad about it?
