'I was near tears,' said Geri Musqua-Leblanc, a residential school survivor from Keeseekoose First Nation in Saskatchewan.
Musqua-Leblanc says the incident at the Halifax airport in February is the first time she's ever been forced to open her sacred medicine pouch. "The training CATSA offers on religious or culturally significant items is applicable to items from different faiths and beliefs, and is not specific to Indigenous cultures," the statement said.
She said that she began feeling anxious, as other travellers were looking and listening to the exchange.- Geri Musqua-Leblanc, co-ordinator of Dalhousie University's Elders in Residence Program
Indigenous If you go through the airport they can look at anything. It doesn't matter who you are. CBC looking.for stories?
Indigenous
Indigenous would you have phrased it as 'desecrated' if this had been a Catholic priest who had his 'blessed' eucharist 'desecrated'? I don't think so. show more respect. take away the quotation marks that imply you don't agree 'stuff in a medicine bag' could be desecrated.
Indigenous Very sad. Employees need to be more careful.
Indigenous Shamanic practitioners call on helping spirits in those other realities to heal people here by restoring their spiritual power. That power comes from a 'whole' soul and the protection of compassionate spirits and power animals, which create a spiritual force field around us.
Indigenous basically the 'wrong type of person/energy' touched the pouch thats a wish that doesn't need nor should it be accommodated airport procedures are a tradition in a way, if you don't wish to follow those traditions then find a different mode of transportation
Indigenous Yeah, I know it’s ridiculous at the airports these days....but honestly, the pouch was opened and the contents looked at. Looked at. It wasn’t as if they were dumped on the ground and kicked around. And why is the fact that this lady is a res school survivor even relevant?
Indigenous Seriously air Canada and CBSA whatever need to back off of people’s stuff. If they did their jobs properly, we wouldn’t have runaway kids all over the world to be killers.
Indigenous IMO, airport authorities are to blame for not stopping Muzzo from driving drunk & I'm sure he did drugs as well while flying back from Florida. Their 'protocol' excuse is pathetic & invalid. Tell it to the Neville-Lakes. This case seems rather petty now in comparison to that.
Indigenous Sob's
Indigenous Sad for her, dangerous for us. If we allow 'sacred' pouches to forgo security, we all know it won't be long until terrorists exploit our naiveté to bring explosives onto your plane. Next time plan ahead.
Indigenous CATSA personnel are not trained very well and we all have our stories. This one is sad. I’m not sure what her background has to do with this though.
Indigenous cbc is home to the 'victim olympics'
