Special changes will impact mental health patients, those seeking a cancer diagnosis and heart attack sufferers.

The standards for non-urgent operations, currently supposed to be 18-weeks from referral to treatment, will also be reviewed.

The proposals follow a clinical review of NHS targets that have been routinely missed for several years as demand has risen. Some clinical and hospital leadership groups have expressed scepticism, and opposition parties are expected to question whether it is a politically expedient measure intended to deflect from the repeated failure to hit current standards.

"If, as seems likely, the new standards on cancer, mental health, waiting times for both elective and in emergency care are demonstrably in the best interests of patients then we will support those. 4 hours is far too long you are seen by a doctor in Germany within 45 minutes

Gigantic hospital near me (brand new state of the art) has a waiting time in A&E of over 6 hours. Saying that people who turn up with a blister or cut finger should be turned away and not say in the waiting line.

Why should the smart people listen to the likes of you? You are just another media company who spreads fake news and blows things out of proportion just to get ratings. Don't believe a word you say, and how can we?

Makes sense. A cut finger and other minor injuries are not as important as a heart attack, yet gets counted as a fail because it's at the back of the queue!
