Latest data from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre shows that cases of potentially fatal Group A Streptococcus are on the rise compared to pre-pandemic years

Cases of potentially fatal invasive Group A Streptococcus disease are 4.5 times higher than expected this year.

The unusual uptick in cases could be linked to lasting impacts from pandemic disruption to normal disease patterns and is happening across Europe, reports the Irish Examiner.12 deaths among children and 18 in adults have been linked to iGAS since October 2022. "Among cases notified since October 2022, there have been 12 deaths in children and 18 in adults ," the report explains.
