Former WA Mental Health Commissioner Tim Marney was let go after being contracted to implement a new model of care for juvenile detainees — and the Inspector of Custodial Services Eamon Ryan says he was just getting started.

The Inspector of Custodial Services has questioned why the Department of Justice did not extend the contract of a senior public servant in charge of reforms at Banksia Hill Juvenile Detention Centre.Mr Marney was let go after his initial six month contract expiredFormer WA Mental Health Commissioner Tim Marney was contracted for six months to implement a new model of care for detainees and the Inspector, Eamon Ryan, said his departure was disappointing.

Mr Marney, who is also a former under-treasurer of WA, was tasked with introducing a 'trauma-informed' model of care, which is something the Office of the Inspector of Custodial Services had spent more than a decade calling for."The appointment of Tim Marney six months ago was a real positive and we were very enthusiastic, as were many people in the community about the appointment of someone with his expertise," Mr Ryan said.

Human rights lawyer Hannah McGlade joined those expressing disappointment that Mr Marney was not continuing in his role."It seems too early to have let Mr Marney go, he was brought in to bring this change about, and we were positive.
