The Fraser Health Authority is warning drug users in Surrey to be wary following a spate of weekend overdoses.Fraser Health says reports suggest some of the overdoses have been connected to cocaine contaminated with an opioid like fentanyl.

The B.C. Coroners Service reported that 1,489 people died of a suspected illicit-drug overdose in B.C. last year, up from 1,487 in 2017. There were 210 overdose deaths in Surrey alone last year, up from 178 in 2017. Fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid often cut into heroin and other drugs, was detected in about 85 per cent of the deaths, up from 82 per cent in 2017.
