This was after she was told she had six months to live. However, she died in 2013, six weeks after being diagnosed with leukaemia. She died peacefully, pain-free and with dignity in my arms. Six months later in 2014, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Fortunately, it was caught in time and after a double mastectomy, I am cancer free now.
This drove home the point that we will all die one day. Some people die every minute and not necessarily of cancer. The true issues are: What will we have done with our lives? What will be the report of others when we are gone? What kind of life would we have lived? It is about quality of life and dignity in death. Letting her go was difficult, but it was with dignity and needless pain. It wasn’t about keeping her alive, it was about giving her a quality life.
What precautions do you advise women to take to save themselves from breast cancer or other cancer-related issues? Women need to know their breasts and watch out for any changes in shape, size, texture, or if there is any fluid leaking from the nipple. They must also examine their breasts every month after their period and any lump must be checked out! That been said, lumps are not the only indication of breast cancer hence the need to look out for breast changes. Check if there is a history of cancer in your family, as this may increase your risk of getting the disease.
