It’s been “a busy season” for wildfires in the province, according to SPSA vice-president of operations Steve Roberts. So far this year, 370 wildfires have been reported. The 10-year average is 415, and the five-year average is 312.So far, 1.2 million hectares have burned this year, almost three times the 10-year average of 442,000 hectares. Most of these fires have been caused by humans, rather than lightning, he added.
With the August long weekend coming up, and weather conditions expected to get warmer in the days ahead, Roberts said people need to be vigilant and take extra precautions.Email AddressBy clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.
