A spike in suspected opioid-related overdoses has prompted a drug alert from Toronto Public Health after seven people died over a four-day period last week.

The seven overdose deaths, from June 28 to July 1, were double the average toll, Toronto Public Health said in a press release that also warned of an uptick in overdoses associated with smoking drugs.

It also noted that other, highly potent opioids and anxiety or insomnia relievers, such as benzodiazepine-related drugs, are being found in samples now being tested that are expected to show as fentanyl.An especially high number of drug-smoking overdoses occurred June 29 outside a supervised consumption site downtown.

Three additional suspected fentanyl overdoses occurred over the weekend in Newmarket and Georgina. One of those incidents also involved cocaine thought to be laced with fentanyl, police said.after one person died amid multiple overdose calls were received from the city’s Fort York neighbourhood area on Friday and Saturday. Five people were injured by an unidentified narcotic, suspected to be an opioid.
